THE SELF-PORTRAIT IN YOUR MIND
Have you ever stopped to consider how you see yourself—not in the mirror, but in your mind? This internal picture, your mental self-portrait, often shapes your choices more than you realise.
The challenge is that, for many of us, this self-portrait is far less flattering than it should be. Research shows that we are often our own harshest critics. Think about it. How many times have you muttered under your breath, “That was stupid,” or “I’m such an idiot,” when you’ve made a mistake? Words you’d never dream of saying to a friend come so easily when directed at yourself.
And slowly, quietly, this kind of self-talk begins to erode our confidence. It chips away at our sense of worth until, without even noticing, we start to hold back. We stall on projects. We shrink from opportunities. Deep down, we begin to wonder: Do I really deserve this? Am I even capable of producing good results?
I’ve learnt that the way you see yourself determines how boldly you step into the world. A distorted self-portrait leads to hesitation, and hesitation keeps dreams locked away.
So here’s my encouragement to you: pause and examine that internal picture. Is it one that builds you up, or is it quietly holding you back?
The truth is, you are far more capable than you give yourself credit for. You are worthy of the good things you desire. And you are so much more than the sum of your mistakes.
The next time you catch yourself speaking harshly to the person in the mirror of your mind, stop. Challenge that voice. Replace it with words that uplift rather than tear down. Because the portrait you carry of yourself will either limit you or lead you into the fullness of who you were created to be.
